On January 1, 2010, the City’s Vacant Building Registration (VBR) ordinance, Chapter 200-33-64 of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances (MCO), took effect. The VBR ordinance requires owner(s) of residential and commercial property left vacant for 30 days or more to register the property with the Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS) and take steps toward assuring the property is secure, properly maintained and not creating a hazard for the surrounding community.
The Vacant Building Registration Application (DNS-18A) is the form to be filed 30 days after a building goes vacant, unless exempt as described in the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances (200-51.7) The cost to register is free and covers a 6 month period. If the building remains vacant, an inspection will be made and a fee will be charged. Each subsequent 6 month period of vacancy will trigger an inspection and fee. Owners are required to maintain the interior and exterior in a safe and sanitary manner.
